Since 2008, the League of American Bicyclists has been ranking states based on their friendliness towards bikes and cyclists. This year their requirements for being considered a bike-friendly state got even tougher. Still, Michigan managed to land in the top 20 bike-friendly states in the country.

According to their 2015 report, Michigan came in at number 18 on the list, and number five in the Midwest. The state earned a score of 43 out of 100. Scores are based on things like legislation and enforcement, policies and programs, infrastructure and funding, education and encouragement, and evaluation and planning.

While a spot in the top 20 isn't bad, our score actually dropped in 2015. Just last year we earned 50 out of 100 points.

So, what can we do to improve? According to our report card, Michigan should adopt a safe passing law, a vulnerable road user law, a law prohibiting a motorist from opening a car door unless it's safe to do so, adopt a state-wide bicycle plan, and dedicate more funding to bike projects and programs, among other things.
