Zagat names Detroit No. 3 Next Hot Food City

More honors for Detroit from Zagat, as the restaurant experts put Detroit at No. 3 on this year's list of America's 10 "Next Hot Food Cities."

Wait, we're next? What does that mean? Does that mean we're not hot right now? What the heck, Zagat?

More to the point, it's probably Zagat's way of listing the places where they don't have a bureau that are generating enough buzz and interest to deserve some mention. And in the blurb, it's easy to see they don't have a bureau in town.

Is the city undergoing a transformation, or are parts of it? Are most of the customers in Detroit's downtown-area restaurants really from the burbs? Did Corktown's revitalization begin in 2000? Is Motor City Wine, founded in 2010, "newish"? Who's "Andy Hallyday"?

(And finally, we cringed a little when they introduced our city with the line, "Detroit’s burgeoning culinary scene, fueled by a ballsy, DIY attitude, is ready to hold its own in the national arena." Ballsy? Unless we're sitting down to a dish of huevos de toro, ballsiness is not something we want to think about. My goodness!)

What's that? We're complaining? Not at all. Any national source zooming in on Detroit gets some stuff wrong, and we've met the writer, Kelly Dobkin, who's super-nice, and obviously intended to highlight what's best about Detroit. (Having written a blurb or two on deadline, we know how it is.)

So thanks to the folks over at Zagat. (By the way, it's spelled "Hollyday!")
