New Jack Swing Gets a Michigan Hip-Hop Remix

Posted By on Wed, Oct 6, 2010 at 9:39 PM

If you're a fan of New Jack Swing, the oft-loved late '80s-through-mid-'90 sub genre of R&B that gave us artists like New Edition, Wreckx-n-Effects, Teddy Riley, Keith Sweat and others, but you also happen to be a fan of new school hip hop, then you'll probably love the New Jack Kings. They're a new endeavor consisting of area rappers T Calmese (formerly known as iLLiTe) from the Subterraneous Crew and Vaughn T from the Athletic Mic League. Both are unsung Michigan hip-hop artists who are determined to get the shine they deserve via this neo throwback release.

They've stuck close to their circle of skilled pals when it comes to features so you'll hear guest appearances from fellow AML alum Buff 1, Mayer Hawthorne, and 14KT alongside Big Tone, Ro Spit and Nick Speed. Former Metro Detroiter Zo! adds an instrumental but don't let any of these guest spots take away credit from Vaughn T who produced the lion's share of this record. He's got a good ear: Teddy Riley beats flip at the right time with some Bell Biv Devoe vocals and just enough 2010 refixing so that it sounds brand new. The concept is clever, the music is fresh but hip-hop nostalgic, and anybody that grew up on BET Soul with Donnie Simpson should dive into the bandcamp link below.
