When it comes to women’s summer fashion, perhaps no item heralds the arrival of balmy weather more than shoes – especially for those of us whose undying love for footwear can induce us to occasionally endure a little discomfort in the interest of aesthetic and – why, yes – sex appeal.

This summer, sensibility ranks well beneath fabulousness in foot coverings, with strappy sandals, sexily curved heels and touches of delicious girlie delicacy in store windows everywhere.

Here are some of the hot trends afoot:

Slides

Fuss-free and versatile, this style also exudes a touch of glamour. Seen most often with one- to two-and-a-half-inch heels, slides go equally well with casual capris and soft summer dresses. For a funkier look, check out fabrics such as patent leather and fake snakeskin. Baker’s at Oakland Mall carries a range of styles and colors, including an adorable mesh closed-toe slipper accented with sequined flowers that doubles as streetwear. Available in several colors, these slippers are not only lovely, they’re a steal at $10.

‘70s stylin’

Say hello again to macramé, chunky wooden heels and natural-toned leathers as the ‘70s influence continues to hold fashion sway. Stores are stocking plenty of hippie chick platforms this season, perfect with both skirts and jeans. For girls who love their denim with a touch of granola, the new generation of hippie footwear offers a welcome, if less comfy, alternative to Birkenstocks.

Open toes

Always a summer standby, sandals are even more plentiful – and fun – this year. From slim flats to glittery, sexpot clubwear, you’ve got good reason to break out the pumice stone and invest in some polish. Ultraglamorous strappy numbers look fantastic on those who can walk in them – and lower-heeled versions abound for the less daring. Also, look for intense colors such as canary yellow, hot pink and crimson to match a brighter summer wardrobe or as shocking accent pieces.

Glamorama

Like a long summer evening, that fabled line between daytime and evening wear grows even fuzzier, as the latest slew of styles doesn’t shy away from all the trimmings. Floral appliques, satin, glitter, rhinestones, beadwork, Chinese prints and marabou show up on everything from high-end designer sandals to bargain-store beauties. Wish you had gone to your prom, after all? Now’s the time to indulge in ridiculously fancy shoes, one great dress and a date who won’t vomit Boone’s Farm on his tux.

All shoes in photos can be found at Baker’s in Oakland Mall, Troy. Call 248-585-5550 for more information.
